Until someone gets hurt …

This past weekend, friends and family gathered at home in Winston-Salem for our friends Johnny and Brittney’s engagement party. With temperatures once again soaring, much of the day Saturday and Sunday was spent hanging out in my parents’ pool, which at one point involved a friendly game of H-O-R-S-E between my husband, my brother Steve and our friend Nick.

It started simple enough, with a few layups, some easy dunks and one or two impressive long-range shots.

But boys will be boys. And pretty soon, they were hopping out of the pool for turns that involved running on the slippery concrete, leaping in the air and dunking behind their heads – into water that’s about three feet deep.

I found myself cringing with each progressively complicated shot – waiting for one of these grown men to slip on the sidewalk or crack his head on the backboard – and hoping that someone would win ASAP.

“How long are they going to play, Mama?” Cera asked.

“Until someone gets hurt,” I replied, shaking my head. “Until someone gets hurt.”
